Mexico Travel Guide

November 17th, 2008

The country is located on the central part of the Americas in-between the united state of America and Guatemala. The country has pleasant weather and so are the people. The country boasts of art, archeology and unique food. Museums and over six thousand miles of coastline. The country is a major player in the tourism industry on the international stage as it is ranked in the top ten of the world trade organization list of top foreign tourist destinations.

The tourism industry in the country is molded around altiplano and the beach resorts. European visitors like to gather at resorts that are smaller in the south of the country and the American visitors like to go to the modern resorts like Puerto Vallarta. The climate of the country varies to a great degree as in the north eastern and northwest of the country it is desert like but in winter it gets really cold tit her extent that it snows sometimes. The southern part of the country is prone to storms and hurricanes and there are rainforests in this part of the country, the northern part of the country usually experiences storms that are pretty violent and the temperature can drop below minus five in winter.

Mexico also practices daylight savings that similar to the ones that were being done by the United States in pre 2007. There are six regions in Mexico namely Baja California, northern Mexico, the Bajio, Central Mexico, Pacific coast and Yucatan Peninsula. The capital city of the country is Mexico City and it is one of the largest cities in the world and has centuries of proud history. The copper canyon is a natural adventure seeker’s paradise. There is a mountain that has a rail line that can climb over eight thousand feet. Be warned that the area is for those willing to go through some rough areas to get to the areas of their interest. The copper canyon is a great wilderness that looks set to stay the way it is and there will be no development that will take place.

The archaeological sites that one can visit include the world heritage site, Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, El Tajin and Palenque, that is a Mayan city that is well known for its large tract of rainforests in Mexico in its area. One can get to Mexico by plane; the cheapest way to fly to Mexico from Australia is through getting a connecting flight in Hawaii. One can take the train, the San Diego trolley can be boarded from California and then get to the Baja California border. If you are an American going to Mexico by car the American insurance is forbidden in Mexico and hence it is better to get a tourist policy that will cover you whether short or long term. The bus service in Mexico is said to be the most efficient in the world. There are many operators but they all use one central ticketing system. The bus services in Mexico service even small villages and have more departures as compared to their United States counterparts. Many bus operators in Mexico have branches in the United States and the fare is quite cheap to be honest as on average a round trip to a major Mexican city can cost 60 dollars. Traveling by boat is only possible in to scenarios one crossing the Guatemala border to Mexico and two, using cruise ships that are from the United States. The visa requirements are different for different nationalities, if you are from a certain country and you are staying less than six months you can get a tourist card at the border. The best way to know if you are eligible for such a visa you have to contact a Mexican consulate in your country

Besides the conventional ways of getting around a country that include going by car, bus and plane. In Mexico due to the high prices in due one can travel using his thumb and by that I mean by hitch hiking. Hitch hiking is a common practice in the Mexican culture and it varies from region to region. The Yucatan peninsula is not a good place to hitch hike as private motorists do not stop for strangers for their safety. The buses in the area will always charge you a fee. The youth is the groups that usually hitch hikes especially during the Easter holidays on their way to the beach. Spanish is the main language in Mexico and English is only used in border towns with the unite states. The currency that is used in the country is Pesos but you should not accept pesos that were issued before 1992 as they are not worth anything.

Accommodation, the country places host to many international hotel chains like holiday inn, Ritz, Sheraton and four points. The rates in the hotels have risen of late but are still reasonably as compared to the rest of the western world. The hotel chains are great for business people and are not for those that want to experience the Mexican way of life. The hotels and motels on the side of the road are not safe. The best place to stay when you want to experience Mexico is in the boutique hotels they are comfortable, safe and cheap. It may be advisable to bring an electric blanket in the cheap hotels as they have no heat. Safety should be your number one concern when in Mexico and not all areas of the country are safe to walk around at night. The areas close to downtown are safe to walk at night and you should avoid poor neighborhoods at night. Health is another concern in Mexico as the country is well known for the travel bug ‘MONTTTEZUMA’S REVENGE”. The bug is due to the contaminated water in some of the poor districts of the country. The best way to stay safe is to drink bottled water or purified water. Lastly one thing to know when you visit Mexico is that punctuality is not in their nature.
